Recorded Jazz Was Born Today

Ninety-six years ago today, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band waxed what many consider the first jazz record.  “Livery Stable Blues” went on to sell a million copies, an unprecedented success at that time, and together with its flip side, “Original Dixieland Jass Band One-Step” started a nationwide phenomenon in popular music.  The spelling of the name has changed, its meaning has been debated and the style is constantly absorbing new influences.  Yet the American-born art form known as “jazz” continues to influence musicians throughout the globe.
