Women’s History Month: Do You Love Rock ‘N’ Roll?

Joan Jett and The Blackhearts “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll” Album Cover (Blackheart Records)

As the leader of the hard-rocking Blackhearts, Joan Jett has achieved eight platinum and gold albums, and nine Top 40 singles – including the classic “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll.”  Joan has her own independent record label, Blackheart Records.  She has acted in movies and on television, and in a Tony-nominated Broadway musical, The Rocky Horror Show.

Joan was born Joan Marie Larkin on September 22, 1958 in Wynnewood, PA, a suburb of Philadelphia.  Joan got her first guitar at age 13.   She was influenced by Suzi Quatro, the first female bass guitar player to become a major rock star. In 2003, Rolling Stone named Joan number 87 of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.  She was one of two women on this list, the other being Joni Mitchell at number 72.

“I grew up in a world that told girls they couldn’t play rock ‘n’ roll,” said Joan.  “My guitar is not a thing.  It is an extension of myself.  It is who I am.”
